About
The purpose
I created this site out of frustration at the limited ability of MediaWiki to properly display and show off Wikimedia Commons’ gorgeous featured pictures. High quality open content photography exists, but no one knows about it.
Open content, like open source, is a failure if no one knows it exists or uses it. So this site is my attempt to promote the open content movement, Wikimedia Commons in particular, and open people’s eyes to the wealth of content that people are willing to share.
This site has no official connection with Wikimedia Commons or the Wikimedia Foundation.
The name
It’s static because this website is in “read-only mode”, unlike a wiki. Images, moreso than documents and text, are discrete chunks, and it can be a bit overkill to assume that every visitor may want to edit every image (by offering them the wiki interface). So where wikis are dynamic, the content of this site is relatively static.
Why photog? To give the site some focus and a more particular audience. People who are looking for some media for a specific purpose are generally going to be more oriented towards the topic of the media they’re looking for, rather than the license.
Maybe there is potential for usefulSVG.org as well.
The content
I intend to “import” the vast majority of Wikimedia Commons’ Featured pictures. From there, Quality Images. I have some personal faves that I might sneak in too. :)
Wikimedia Commons is itself an archive, with some images coming from source such as the US Federal government or Flickr. So there’s no guarantees you haven’t seen material here elsewhere before.
If you want to contribute to this site, I suggest you read up on Wikimedia Commons’ First steps guide and the Featured Pictures candidates guidelines .
The creator
I’m an editor and administrator on Wikimedia Commons by the name of user:pfctdayelise. You can check out the photographs I’ve uploaded or perhaps my Flickr account (if you wanna buy me a pro account, that would be cool).
For what it’s worth, I’m very proud of my single Featured Picture. :)
The design
This site is powered by Textpattern 4.0.4 r1956, an open source PHP/MySQL CMS.
The theme Fresh Bananas was designed by Jeff Wheeler, and ported to Textpattern with a little Magic Dust by Stuart. It should validate to XHTML 1.0 Strict.
